Articles Separation Anxiety A lot of dogs and cats feel anxious about being left alone. There are many things that you can do to help your pet feel more comfortable when you are away from home. Some solutions I can give for you are:
• Don't make leaving a big event. This may sound counterproductive. However, when you spend a lot of time saying goodbye you make leaving an event, you are giving your pets a signal that you are stressed and will miss them. You are also reinforcing that when you act this way you are leaving, which starts your problem all over again.
• Leave interactive toys for your pets. Toys that dispense treats, turn every once in a while or toys that you can stuff with hard to eat items (peanut butter, Kong spread, etc.) will keep your pet busy for a time. (It also helps to hide these items so your pet must search for them)
• Leave soothing music on so your pet doesn't feel alone
• Create a safe place for your pets. This place should be their area and be comfortable, safe and secure.
• Try natural products that promote relaxation, such as Sleepytime Tonic.
• If you will be gone for an extended period of time, try to keep your pet in your home. Your pet will feel more comfortable if they are in a comfortable surrounding. If you can have a friend or family member who your pet feels comfortable with stop by to feed and play with your pet, it will make them feel less lonely
These solutions won’t work for every pet and some pets may be too anxious to calm down without additional intervention. Contact your Veterinarian for suggestions on how to help your pet relax.
