Foods to keep away from your dog

We’ve all heard the basic information on what foods are bad for your dog.  The food item that most of us know to keep our dogs away from is chocolate. However, there are many other human foods that are known to cause problems in your dog or that are thought to cause problems for your dog.

When cooking for your pets, you should always contact your veterinarian first to make sure that your dogs will not be harmed by any of your ingredients as well as to make sure they receive adequate nutrition from what you provide.

With that being said, there are a number of items that you should not include in your food for your pets.  The known harmful items to dogs are:

• Chocolate
• Onions
• Grapes
• Raisins
• Some mushrooms
• Macadamia nuts

Below is a list of items that have been shown to be toxic in larger quantities.  If you plan on feeding any of these to your pets, even in small quantities, you should consult your veterinarian and receive their ok first.

• Garlic
• Citrus oil extracts
• Caffeine
• Baby food (containing garlic or onion powder)

These lists are not all conclusive and you should consult your veterinarian before giving your dog any food that is not approved for dog consumption.  It is also important to investigate the ingredients in all foods given to your pet with a qualified veterinarian.
